Fatal Frame Opening Reception

Fatal Frame
A Call & Response Examining Clay Culture through Personal Narrative

Familial trauma ripples through decades and over thousands of miles-- a history grieved, worried, and worked into physical form again. Heavy slabs of clay and tactile, hand-sized tears make tangible the delicate echo of a great-grandmother’s final day and the history of a family’s tragedy. In his studio, Daniel Alejandro Trejo navigates the complexities of this inherited existence, intertwining the spectral threads of generational trauma with the metaphysical, in which each form he sculpts serves as a conduit for bygone energy, emotions, and memories. The clay itself holds its own history over an ancient timescale, making it a particularly poignant medium to tell this story.

The history of clay art, however, is fraught. An entrenched gendering of contemporary clay arts vs ceramic craft casts a long shadow, strengthening the grip of the masculinity tropes of the Heavy and the Rough. Trejo orchestrates a revolt against this history, liberating himself from the rules of Arneson, Voulkos, and their era, in service to his art. The exclusionary machismo, so often a part of ceramic studio culture far and wide, simply falls short and has no place in Trejo's careful reverence.

Daniel Alejandro Trejo’s exploration of his place in the history of Northern California ceramic arts and the subsequent development of Fatal Frame is supported by a Seeding Creativity grant from The Office of Arts & Culture (OAC), who received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Paper Mache Dolls: Objects of Remembrance & Healing

Join us Friday, September 22, 6PM for the opening of Paper Mache Dolls: Objects of Remembrance & Healing, a collection of community member made paper mache dolls, led by Ramona Garcia, that honor connections between past and present, and the power they hold as objects of healing and remembrance.

Ramona Garcia, through a Seeding Creativity Grant facilitated a series of doll making workshops at TANA and other locations that focused on trauma informed practices and expressly engaged often-overlooked Spanish speaking immigrant community. All free Spanish speaking workshops sought to alleviate the multiple needs surrounding mental health services in the region. Ramona Garcia is a visual artist based in Sacramento, CA. Her work is inspired by her cultural upbringing and Mexican healing traditions, particularly folk art & paper mache doll-making. Her mission is to honor these traditions by raising awareness about artisan work, cultural revitalization and bridging together traditional artmaking with practices of art therapy. Ramona is a recent recipient of the Seedling Creativity Grant through Sacramento’s Office of Art & Culture.

LOCATION: Celebration Arts, 2727 B Street, Sacramento, CA 95816

ABOUT THE PLAY: Under the guidance of theatre artist, educator, and culture bearer Nicole C. Limón, an ensemble of local perfomring artsts have collaborated to create a new devised play about the treatment of people with uterues during outpatient gynocological procedures such as pap smears, IUD placements, colposcopies, cervical biopsies, and pelvic exams. The performance material was derived from interviews, guided research, surveys, conversation, and theatre activities explored with the ensemble during rehearsal sessions.

With wit, humor, empathy and ceremony, - as well as a dash of physical theatre - "Just A Pinch: A Uterus Play" explores the way people with uteruses are treated during routine exams and outpatient procedures and the potentially widespread lack of pain relief and humane care that people encounter during these visits to the doctor. Join us as we bring our work to the stage!

*This project was funded in part by a generous grant from the Sacramento City Office of Arts and Culture, with support from the City of Sacramento and the National Endowment for the Arts, as part of the Seeding Creativity grant program.

Summer Seedlings

For the duration of the 2023 summer program at the Mustard Seed School at Loaves & Fishes, dancer and choreographer Alexandria Griffith has been sharing and exploring creative movement and dance in collaboration with children ranging from K-8 grades. During this summer program, children were given an opportunity to engage in various art-making processes and connect to their creative selves utilizing their imagination and forms of individual and collective expression.

In collaboration with Sacramento-based filmmaker Jade Tabayoyong, this event will premiere a short experimental documentary film whose mission is to share the joy and importance of making space for art in our lives; particularly in the lives of the future generations.

Beauty of Japan

Beauty of Japan

The Beauty of Japan “和●美” presents the vibrant world of Japanese culture through traditional and contemporary performing arts. I have created performance pieces that express Japan's sacred rituals, mythology, history, and festivals through dancing, singing and playing Japanese musical instruments such as Taiko (Japanese drumming), Koto (Japanese harp), and Fue (Bamboo flute). By showcasing Japan's serenity, strength, vibrancy, and beauty through visual, auditory, and sensory experiences, this concert serves as an inspiration for others to explore and appreciate the richness of Japanese culture. These are performances that cannot be seen very often in North America. This concert will appeal to those who are interested in Japan, or those who are unfamiliar with Japanese culture, or elderly Japanese Americans who cannot travel to Japan. I hope the audience will experience the beauty of Japan and find comfort and inspiration in their hearts.
