Join us Friday, September 22, 6PM for the opening of Paper Mache Dolls: Objects of Remembrance & Healing, a collection of community member made paper mache dolls, led by Ramona Garcia, that honor connections between past and present, and the power they hold as objects of healing and remembrance.
Ramona Garcia, through a Seeding Creativity Grant facilitated a series of doll making workshops at TANA and other locations that focused on trauma informed practices and expressly engaged often-overlooked Spanish speaking immigrant community. All free Spanish speaking workshops sought to alleviate the multiple needs surrounding mental health services in the region. Ramona Garcia is a visual artist based in Sacramento, CA. Her work is inspired by her cultural upbringing and Mexican healing traditions, particularly folk art & paper mache doll-making. Her mission is to honor these traditions by raising awareness about artisan work, cultural revitalization and bridging together traditional artmaking with practices of art therapy. Ramona is a recent recipient of the Seedling Creativity Grant through Sacramento’s Office of Art & Culture.
